Protocols & Medical Directives

This is a sad article from EMS1 not only for the patients outcome but not the providers and the community. It sounds by the article the agency was already having problems, this could have been part of the outcome of this call. No matter what the reason and with limited medical information about the call, it sounds like it could have been a possible preventable death. The senior provider decided it wasn't so there might have been gross brain exposure or other reasons, but for a person to lay for 5 hours moaning adds to the questions. Most agencies will allow a senior provider to make calls in the field, but when in question, those providers also need to know when to call for help or guidance. If your agency does not have solid working protocols or guidelines, then it will only lead to troubles. Be safe but also be smart.
